Rare et porté notamment en Vénétie, ce nom italien pourrait désigner celui qui est originaire du Frioul, mais on pensera plutôt à la commune de Friola, dans la province de Vicenza (Vénétie). On trouve aussi la forme Friolo, présente notamment dans les Pouilles.
